On this day 20 years ago, Lenovo completed the acquisition of IBM’s Personal Computing Division, a defining milestone in the technology powerhouse’s journey as a global technology leader.

Since then, two core strengths have consistently guided Lenovo: innovation and operational excellence.

“We’ve redefined what’s possible in personal computing, introduced entirely new device categories, expanded our portfolio to include mobile phones, infrastructure, as well as services and solutions, and built a balanced global operating model that is both agile and resilient,” Lenovo Chairman and CEO Yuanqing Yang said. “These foundations remain our competitive edge, and they’re more important than ever as we enter a new era.”

Yang was present for the acquisition signing and continues to lead through the era of Hybrid AI as Lenovo accelerates global transformation and delivers Smarter technology for all.

“Looking ahead, we stand at the forefront of a profound transformation driven by AI,” Yang said. “Already reshaping how individuals and enterprises operate, AI will accelerate even more disruptive innovation in the years to come. This is Lenovo’s moment to lead.”

As noted at the time, the acquisition made major global inroads and transformed Lenovo into the world’s third-largest PC maker. The following decades saw Lenovo claim (and hold) the top spot.

Reflecting on the merger in 2015, PCMag recognized the singular success of the business integration: “Credit the hard work of the Chinese and U.S. teams for making this happen and for the incredible growth Lenovo has had with its PC business. The merging of these two business cultures alone is quite a feat.” TIME called it “one of the greatest case studies on how to merge massive international enterprises into a winning firm.”

Lenovo carries the momentum of 20 groundbreaking years—notable as much for cultural and community integration as technology advances—into a clear vision to further develop, deliver, and democratize devices, services, and solutions.

Now, in 2025, Lenovo is experiencing growth and momentum across the business, award-winning global supply chain resilience and flexibility, AI-powered internal transformation, and bold commitments to sustainability and corporate citizenship.
